Portsmouth dad wins volunteer award a year after returning home from prison
Rob won the New Volunteer Award at the Portsmouth Inspiring Volunteer Awards 2026, presented at the Kings Theatre on 6 October with his kids in the audience. He had not written a speech because he never expected to win. The feature tells the story of coming home, feeling out of place in a quiet life, and choosing to get up every day and reach out to people who need it. It covers the qualifications and teaching he did inside, restarting Sidekick Initiative from a single pop-up stand, the mountain challenges and more than 100 miles run for suicide awareness this September, and the plan for a 24-hour base in the north of Portsmouth.
